1. Immediate Aftercare (Saniderm or Plastic Film)

Depending on your skin type and your tattoo artist’s recommendation, your tattoo will be covered with either Saniderm (a clear, breathable adhesive film) or plastic film (Saran wrap).

  • Saniderm:
Leave the Saniderm film on your tattoo for approximately 12-24 hours (or as specifically instructed by your tattoo artist). To remove, gently peel the film off under room-temperature running water (sink or shower). Do not re-bandage your tattoo after removal.

  • Plastic Film (Saran wrap):
If your tattoo is covered with plastic film, remove it after 2-4 hours (or as instructed by your artist). Gently remove the film under room-temperature running water. Do not re-bandage your tattoo after removal.

Always follow your tattoo artist's specific instructions regarding covering duration.

2. Cleaning Your Tattoo

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
  • Gently wash your tattoo with liquid or foam unscented soap (such as Dr. Bronner’s plain soap) and warm water, using your fingertips in a gentle circular motion.
  • For the initial wash, use comfortably warm (but not scalding) water.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of blood and plasma, as these can cause scabbing.
  • Do not scrub your tattoo with a washcloth or loofah during the healing period.
  • Let your tattoo air dry or gently blot it dry with a clean paper towel.

3. Moisturizing & Ointment

  • For the first 2-3 days, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or organic cold-pressed coconut oil.
  • After that, switch to a water-based, fragrance-free lotion such as Aveeno or Curel.
  • Apply lightly so the tattoo is moisturized to the touch but not greasy or shiny. It is better to be slightly dry and flaky than to be over-moisturized.
  • Repeat this process at least twice a day. If you work out or get dirty, you may want to add another wash to your day.
  • In between washes, you may apply lotion 1-2 times as needed, always washing your hands first.

4. Lifestyle Tips & What to Avoid

To ensure proper healing, avoid the following for at least 2 weeks:

  • Soaking your tattoo (no hot tubs, bubble baths, lakes, oceans, or rivers).
  • Direct sunlight exposure on your tattoo.
  • Excessive sweating for the first 7 days.
  • Tight or restrictive clothing. Wear loose, cotton clothing to prevent irritation and allow your tattoo to breathe.
  • Be mindful of your sheets and clothing—leakage is normal, so use old or dark fabrics and sleep on your other side if possible.
  • Bring a change of shirt to work if your tattoo is in a spot that may rub or leak.

5. Ongoing Care (Weeks 3-6)

  • Continue moisturizing your tattoo 1-2 times a day.
  • Once your tattoo has fully healed (after about 3 weeks), begin using a zinc-based sunscreen to protect your tattoo from fading.
  • Always use sunscreen when exposing your tattoo to the sun.

6. Important Reminders

  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel any flaking skin or scabs.
  • Do not use scented lotions, petroleum jelly, or heavy ointments unless specifically recommended by your tattoo artist.
  • If you notice signs of infection (excessive redness, swelling, pus), immediately contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.

Thank you for trusting Sundog Art Studios with your tattoo! Proper aftercare is the key to a beautiful, long-lasting piece of art. If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process, please reach out to us anytime.
